Spotlight on Professional Development: Novelist
Do you have customers asking for your help selecting
age-appropriate titles? Are you trying to remember the title of a
book you read three years ago, the one with time travel and a red
cover? Are you trying to put together a book display on a
specific topic and drawing a blank on titles to include? It might be
time to reacquaint yourself with Novelist.
Available through the Access PA Power Library, Novelist is a great tool
for all your reader's advisory needs. In addition to author and
title searches, you can also "describe a plot" and limit your
searches by audience. When you find a book that fits your needs, you
can select "Find Similar Titles" to search by subject
heading. You can even find ready-made booklists and booktalks.
The resources available through Novelist are almost endless and the
interface is easy to navigate. If it's been awhile, or if you've never
tried it, check Novelist out today.

Miss the new Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Teen Services Web site!
On June 11,
Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh unveiled its new teen Web site. With
custom artwork by Ramon Trevino, a color-changing display and content
updated weekly or monthly, the new Web site is a fantastic resource for
teens and library staff working with teens. Check out the items
in the locker for links to resource pages, booklists and more.
Teens can even submit a review on the "Books and More"
page! Select reviews by teens and teen library staff will be
featured on the homepage and changed weekly. If you'd like to
submit a review of a teen item (books, movies, CDs) or something you
think teens will love, please email it to Karen
Brooks-Reese.

Technology Update
The
minutes of the Technology Group and the Technology Council are posted
to the District Services Web page under Technology and to the
eiNetwork members page under Technology Group and Steering Committee. The
Technology Council combines the Technology Group and the eiNetwork
Steering Committee. The Technology Group did not meet separately
in May and June; however, the second meeting of the Technology Council
was held on May 28, 2009. The Technology Group meets the first Friday
of every month and the Technology Council meets quarterly.

Advocate for Level Public Library
Funding! Do Not Hesitate Another Day to Act!
Continue to spread the word and urge friends, relatives
and neighbors to write, email, telephone or visit with State Senators,
State Representatives and the Governor to advocate against any decrease
in public library funding. Public library funding needs to remain
level.
Detailed advocacy information with talking points can be found on the Pennsylvania Library
Association's Web site. The District Library Center, Carnegie
Library of Pittsburgh maintains an advocacy Web site to assist with your
advocacy efforts. Helpful information can also be found in the
advocacy section of the Allegheny County Library
Association (ACLA)'s wiki.
Carnegie
Library of Pittsburgh - East Liberty
CLP - East
Liberty closed to the public on Saturday, June 13 to begin a 15-month,
39,000 square foot renovation and expansion project. The $5.6
million East Liberty Library construction project will allow library
services to move to one floor and provide a better visual presence in
the community. Working with Library staff and community input,
architects from EDGE Studio designed the building to incorporate a
two-story atrium that will welcome customers to a library equipped with
updated children and teen spaces, community meeting rooms and reading
areas. As with all Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh renovations, CLP
- East Liberty will be built to LEED standards and be fully accessible
in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Pennsylvania
Library Association and the ALA Emerging Leaders Program
The Pennsylvania
Library Association (PaLA) is pleased to participate in the American
Library Association's (ALA)Emerging LeadersProgram, which enables 120
new librarians to get on the fast track to leadership within ALA and
the library field. This program consists of two workshop days with
Maureen Sullivan and Connie Paul, participating in projects, networking
with 119 of library peers, an inside look into ALA structure, and an
opportunity to serve the profession. PaLA will select one member to
represent Pennsylvania's libraries. ALA has set some eligibility requirements for
this program.

Shipping Update
On June 12, the
Shipping Department received 5 new Ford vans. Two are extended cab
vehicles to accommodate the additional bins we are now carrying on our
heavier routes. While the new vans no longer sport the colorful
wrap used during the last few years, they can be identified by
the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny County
Library Association logos. Look for them on the road beginning
Monday, June 15.
ILL Update
Please remember
and remind library customers that Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is always an
option when materials cannot be located within the Allegheny County
Library Association
consortium.

Commonwealth
Libraries 
Matt Kane,
Executive Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Education and Commissioner
of Libraries and former Advisor for Research and Statistics, will be
retiring June 30, 2009. Everyone who has counted on Matt
through the years to always be "Johnny on the spot" will miss
his knowledge and expertise. We will also miss his patience when dealing
with our simple and complex questions.
As you may know, the current Head of the Office for State Aid and
Statistics is Eileen Kocher, formerly of the Department of Education
Resource Center. Also assisting in the Office of State Aid and Statistics
are Beth Bisbano, Advisor for Research & Statistics, and Linda Rohm,
State Aid Administration Associate.
Marketing
for Lifelong Learning Awards Announced
Congratulations to
the Sewickley Public Library for winning an annual Marketing for Lifelong
Learning Award for their Movie Stars @ Your Library program offered to
teens ages six through 12.Their prize includes a framed award
certificate, Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA) conference
registration reimbursement plus $500 for expenses to attend the September
PaLA Conference in Harrisburg where Kelly Rottmund, Sewickley Public
Library's Teen Services Librarian will present the program to
attendees.
Sewickley Public Library was one of four public libraries in Pennsylvania
to receive the Marketing for Lifelong Learning Award, others included:
Abington Community Library, Lititz Public Library and Peters Township
Public Library.
District Aid
Agreement and Budget Approved
The Pittsburgh
District Executive Committee completed negotiations regarding the 2009/10
District Library Services Agreement and District Aid Budget. The
Agreement and Budget were ratified by 44 Allegheny County Library
Association library directors, and approved on June 2 by M. Clare Zales,
Deputy Secretary of Education and Commissioner of Libraries, Office of
Commonwealth Libraries. A copy of the 2009/2010 Agreement and Budget is
posted to the District Services Web site.
