Looking
for a great, unique teen program? The Sewickley Public Library
and the Shaler North Hills Library are pairing up for a Teen Air Guitar Contest.
Sewickley Public Library, June 23
We know they play air guitar in the privacy of their bedrooms, now
teens can show off their skills at the library and win rad prizes!
Teens at the Sewickley Public Library will play air guitar to a 60
second song clip of their choosing. Winners from the Sewickley program
will be eligible to compete in the July championship event against
teens from the Shaler North Hills Library. For teens in

Get ready to Express Yourself with Teen Summer Reading 2009! These titles from the Teen
Summer Reading booklist will encourage teens to express themselves
through music, art, dance, writing and more.

Teen Summer Reading!
Teen Summer Reading starts in June. By now, all participating
libraries should have received posters, booklists and gift cards.
Please contact Karen Brooks-Reese if you are missing any of
these items.
In an effort to "Go Green," we are no longer printing
registration forms, books read forms or evaluations. Electronic
versions of those documents are available on the Teen Services wiki. Additional
resources, including Web sites and program ideas, can also be found on
the wiki.
If you are running an online Teen Summer Reading program or including a
Teen Summer Reading section on your Web site, please include a link to
the online summer reading evaluation! Teens must complete the
evaluation online or on paper to be eligible for the grand prize, six
tickets to Kennywood and limo transportation there and back. The

 District
Services Department Has Relocated
CLP-East Liberty will close Saturday, June 13 for a 15-month
renovation. In preparation, the District Services Department has
relocated to Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Main in Oakland. District
Services staff: Phyllis DiDiano, Administrative Assistant, Connie
Galbraith, District Services Coordinator, Teen Services Coordinator
Karen Brooks-Reese, and the CLP Youth Services staff share office space
on the third floor in the former Interlibrary Loan Department office
space.

The Time to Call, Email and Write
to the Governor and Your Legislators is Now! Do Not Hesitate
Another Day!
The Pennsylvania Library Association (PaLA) Legislative Committee has
requested that all public library staff and trustees make a commitment
to the advocacy effort by lobbying against the proposed drastic
decreases to public library funding. In your letters and those of
your friends, relatives and library patrons, ask the Governor
and Legislators to keep funding to public libraries at the 2008/09
level. Tell them you oppose cutting the Public Library Subsidy by
50%; eliminating State funding for the Library Access line (POWER
Library, statewide borrowing, interlibrary delivery); reducing
funding to the Electronic Library Catalog(Ask Here PA, Access PA database);
and cutting funding for the State Library by 50%. Since some federal
dollars are distributed based upon the amount of State money committed
to public libraries, the proposed State cuts will cost Pennsylvania's
public libraries more than $1 million in federal money.

Shipping Update
The Shipping
Department continues to work toward our goal of meshing the automated
sort and manual sort procedures together. The yellow slips are
working, but might not be the final solution. Several library
directors have made suggestions for improving them-thank
you. All suggestions are under consideration.
Also, kudos to libraries that are barcoding on the outside. It
makes such a difference when sending items through the conveyor!
ILL Update
Please remember
to cross out the name of your library on the ILL label when returning
ILL items. That will prevent the item from coming back to your
library. While the sorting crew should catch that the item as a
return, sometimes it isn't obvious from the label whether the item is
going out or returning.
Please let Laura Perrier at 412.920.4536 know if library staff or
customers are having any problems relating to ILL or ILLiad.

LSTA
Grants
Its that time of
year again!
Directors who want
to apply for a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant in
2010 need to begin planning. If you were unable to attend the
Commonwealth Libraries sponsored LSTA Grant Writing Workshop in May,
but still wish to apply for a 2010 LSTA grant, it is highly recommended
that you attend a two-hour webinar on Thursday, June 11 from 9

In order to determine which of the eight public library LSTA grant
categories you want to apply for or where your idea best fits, begin by clicking here.
The Department of
Education eGrants online application is now available.
After a decision is made concerning which grant to apply for, contact
Beth Mellor, Marketing and Member Services Coordinator, ACLA, and she
will open the online application and review the login
process. Additional details concerning the grant submission process
will be sent by Connie Galbraith in June via email to all directors
who are planning to apply.
2009
Directory of Pennsylvania Libraries
All library directors should have recently received a paper copy of the
2009 Directory of Pennsylvania Libraries mailed directly from
Commonwealth Libraries. If you have not received your copy, the District
Services Office has extra copies for distribution. Please email Phyllis DiDiano
with your request. Remember, you can also access the information
contained in the Directory of Pennsylvania
Libraries online.
District Aid
Agreement and Budget
Negotiations regarding the 2009/10 District Library Services Agreement
and District Aid Budget were completed by the District Executive
Committee on April 15. The Agreement and Budget were ratified by 44 ACLA
library directors and sent to M. Clare Zales, Deputy Secretary of
Education and Commissioner of Libraries, for approval. We are hopeful
that a 2.3% cut to the District Aid budget that provides for
Shipping, Interlibrary Loan, Youth and Teen Services support and District
Services will be the only cut in State funding we have to accept. We need
to continue to advocate to our legislators and the governor to assure
that the proposed 50% cuts in public library funding do not happen.
