Two continuing
education Opportunities in November
A workshop, Customer
Focus - Unique Resources & Services at Your Pittsburgh District
Library Center (PDLC) will be offered free for directors,
librarians, support staff and trustees in the Carnegie Library
of Pittsburgh - Main, Lecture Hall on Tuesday, November 17 from 9:30 am -
12:30 pm. The workshop will feature professional librarians from
various departments of the PDLC, including First Floor, Reference
Services, Music, Pennsylvania, Job & Career Education Center, Oliver
Special Collections, Film & Audio and Business will discuss and
share the hidden treasures of materials available for customers.
The workshop offers 3 hours of continuing education. Please email Phyllis DiDiano to
register.
The
Web cast Millennials in the
Library will be offered free through The College of DuPage
Library Challenges & Opportunities series on Friday, November 13 from
12:00 - 1:30 pm. This discussion hopes to clarify once and
for all who exactly are Millennials and how libraries can better serve
them as patrons, students and staff? You do not have to register for the
Web cast.
Mark
the date! An email with the Web cast information will be sent out
to everyone via the einlibs listserv a few days prior to the
workshop. Web casts can be watched alone or with a small group at
your desktop PC. This workshop offers 1.5 hours of continuing education.
All College of DuPage workshops are sponsored through the Office of
Commonwealth Libraries and paid for with Library Services and Technology

As I write this, it's cold and rainy outside. This, I
know, is a precursor to cold and snowy. I could let this depress
me...or I could use it as an excuse to encourage you to do a display of books
in which winter is celebrated - or at least plays a large role.

Do you ever find yourself
struggling for a program idea, hunting for a booklist or wondering how
to reach your teens? The Young Adult Library Services Association
(YALSA) offers several resources, in addition to their Web site
and listservs that you might find helpful:

Wiki
Containing everything from
information about upcoming conferences to program ideas and booklists,
this wiki is close to becoming a one-stop shop for all your Teen
Services needs.
Librarians around the
country contribute to the YALSA blog. You'll find book reviews,
information about YALSA elections, interesting new items that are
pertinent to our jobs and more. One recent blog post that I, as a
social networking and electronic resource junky, found particularly
interesting was "A few
thoughts on publicity,"
written by Sarah Ludwig. Even more valuable than the posts,
sometimes, is the discussion that follows afterward in the comments!

 Web Resources
What is a Vook?
A vook is a
reading/watching experience, a new innovation that blends text and
video into one. Simon& Schuster
launched four vooks in early October. A vook can be viewed
on any computer - no special software is required.

Technology
The minutes of the
Technology Group and the Technology Council are posted to the District Services Web
page under "Technology" and to the eiNetwork members page
under Technology Group,
and Users Group Steering Committee/Technology Council.
The Technology Council meets a minimum of three times a year; it
combines the Technology Group and the eiNetwork Steering Committee. The
Technology Group meets the first Friday of every month.

 Shipping
Update
A Reminder from
Shipping Concerning Item Barcodes
Please barcode all new items on
the outside of materials. If you feel you must put barcodes on
the inside, do not 'hide' them on the last disc or under a
sleeve. Barcodes that are fading need to be replaced.
Writing the barcode number on the item is not a good substitute.
One can still check the item out by typing in the numbers, but there is
no way to do that on the automated sorting machine. Please help
us out. The faster we can put items through, the faster they return to
you and our customers! Thanks!
ILL
The State budget process is over, but there is no resolution yet
as to how reduced funding will affect library services in PA. Two
services that support ILL are the Interlibrary Delivery Service of
Pennsylvania (IDS) and Access Pennsylvania (the database). The
first affects our abilities to borrow and lend materials through UPS
because IDS receives a state subsidy. It is part of a budget line
that was reduced from more than $7 million to $3
million. The second, Access Pennsylvania, is mainly used to lend
materials to other public libraries and schools, but libraries also use
it to borrow materials from within Pennsylvania. That service
line in the budget was eliminated. District Services dollars also
underwrite the cost of staffing the ILL Center, District Aid was cut by
$277,145. At this time, ILL services remain at their usual
levels, however, that will need to change. Please address

Libraries 
Public Library Subsidy Update
M.
Clare Zales, Deputy Secretary of Education and Commissioner of Libraries
sent out an email on October 15, 2009
with an update concerning the decrease in the Public Library Subsidy for
2010.
MLS Scholarships
No
new MLS scholarships will be offered to perspective candidates in
2010.
